Guwahati, July 21: Four members of a family, including a woman and her daughter, went missing after they were swept away by flash floodwaters in Abhaypuria village under Tengapukhuri Police Station in Assam’s Charaideo district on Sunday evening, with villagers alleging a delayed official response to the tragedy.
The incident occurred around 7 pm after heavy rain triggered a sudden surge in water levels, inundating large parts of the village.
According to local residents, Rohini Dubara and his family were attempting to move to safer ground when his wife, Tutumoni Dubara, and daughter, Bidisha Dubara, were swept away while crossing a flooded stretch.
Hearing their cries for help, the couple’s two sons, Bidyut Dubara and Biplab Dubara, jumped into the raging waters in an attempt to rescue them. They too were swept away by the strong current.
The family said they immediately alerted the district administration through the emergency helpline and later contacted Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Dr. Neha Yadav, who reportedly assured them that a rescue team would be dispatched.
However, villagers alleged that no rescue personnel or police team had reached the spot even by Monday afternoon, prompting anger among residents, who questioned the delay in launching search operations despite the emergency.
As of Monday afternoon, all four remained missing.
The incident comes as Assam grapples with widespread flooding triggered by incessant monsoon rains. Charaideo is among the worst-affected districts, with overflowing rivers and flash floods disrupting normal life and forcing thousands of people from their homes.
