Four arrested in Cachar for impersonating Pakistani terrorists to extort money

Guwahati, Feb 27: Cachar police have arrested four persons in Assam’s Cachar district for impersonating as Pakistani terrorists to extort money from a construction agency, engaged in the work for four lane highway.

Speaking to media persons, Cachar Superintendent of police Numal Mahatta said two of the four arrested persons are residents of Kachudaram and while the other two are from Katigorah area.

“Two of the prime accused were arrested from Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district with the help of Meghalaya Police,” Mahatta added.

Mahatta said that on February 21, police received a complaint from Jhandu Infratech Ltd company, which is engaged in highway construction works in Cachar district, and an operation was launched.

“The complainants said that one unknown person, identifying himself as a member of the banned terrorist organization Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT), called an employee of the company and demanded a ransom of Rs 10 crores from the company and also threatened dire consequences if the demanded money was not paid at the time frame,” SP said.

Officials said, on receipt of the information, Cachar Police registered a case in Katigorah Police Station (Case No. 10/2025) under section 308(2) (extortion) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During the investigation, police found adequate information about the involvement of four individuals in this matter and arrested them from different areas of Cachar and Meghalaya.

The arrested persons have been identified as Boktar Hussain (prime accused), Samsir Uddin Barbhuiya, Md Alekuddin (25) and Ajiruddin alias Amiruddin.

Boktar and Samsir were produced before the court, and they have been sent to police custody, while the other two will be produced before the court on Thursday.
