Shillong, July 14: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has shut down the General Post Office (GPO) in Shillong and the Post Office at 7th Mile Upper Shillong for allegedly disregarding the state holiday declared on account of the Behdeinkhlam festival of the Jaintia people.
The FKJGP, led by Arkinfield Khonglam, President of the Shillong city unit, Bantei Nongkhlaw, President of the Banuin unit, and Donkupar Nongdhar, President of the Pomlum unit, took swift action upon learning that the post offices were operating despite the government-declared holiday.
In a statement, the FKJGP demanded the state and central governments to issue directives ensuring that various departments respect such occasions.
The FKJGP also cautioned that stern action will be taken against those who disrespect the upcoming death anniversary of Khasi legendary freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem, observed on July 17.
