Shillong, April 8: In a tragic incident, a father lost his life due to drowning after a boat capsized at Umiam Lake on Sunday around 2:00 PM.
The victim, identified as Mahamsing Sten, 39 years old resident of Kiewkyrdem, Ri Bhoi District was sailing in a boat along with his 10-year-old son and four others to cross to the other side of Umiam Lake for a picnic.
As they were crossing Umiam Lake, strong winds caused the boat to capsize, leaving all six individuals in the water. Five others, including the victim’s son, managed to escape, but unfortunately, only Sten drowned.
Sten’s body was recovered on Monday morning with the help of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and locals.
Since the body had submerged deep inside the lake, it took many hours for the SDRF team to recover it.
However, following the recovery of the body, it was taken to Umiam Police Station before handed over to the family of the victim.
