Tura, Dec14: Wild elephants have attacked and damaged a house leaving a woman critically injured after the herd rampaged through their compound in South West Garo Hills district bordering Bangladesh.
The incident took place in the early hours of the morning at Kawahagra village.
According to district officials, a wild herd of 7-8 elephants crossed over from the Bangladesh side into Indian territory around 5 AM Thursday in the Kamarpara area.
Around 7 AM it entered the village of Kawahagra in search of food and attacked the house of Wajing Momin.
His daughter Faidila Momin who was preparing food inside the kitchen was injured in the attack and has been taken to Ampati civil hospital for medical treatment.
“As per information from villagers, the herd consisting of around 7 to 8 elephants are still in the area and wildlife department teams with police have been rushed to the site,” informed Deputy Commissioner R P Marak.
With the lean dry season underway, herds of wild elephants crisscross between Bangladesh and India, through the Garo Hills sector, foraging for food and in the process coming into conflict with humans.
