Shillong, April 24: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma emphasized that the true purpose of education should go far beyond achieving high marks or securing government jobs. He said the core objective should be to shape individuals into better human beings.

“In Meghalaya, education is not all about employment and government jobs. Education will definitely make you better, as a human being,” Sangma stated during the World Earth Day 2025 celebration organized by Mawsynram Border Area College (MBAC), Mawsynram.

He highlighted that the standard of any community or state is reflected in its educational values and urged both students and teachers to embrace the opportunity to learn and teach with sincerity.

Addressing the sense of burden often felt by students and teachers when attending classes, he said, “Don’t do that.” He described teaching as a God-given opportunity to shape a better world and encouraged students to strive to become better versions of themselves.

The minister also spoke about the government’s focus on sports and youth development. He announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an indoor stadium at the college has already been prepared and that construction will begin soon.

Looking ahead to the National Games, which Meghalaya will soon host, Sangma said this is a major milestone for the state. He added that various sports infrastructures are being upgraded in preparation for the event.

On the occasion of World Earth Day, Sangma also expressed concern over the environmental imbalance affecting the planet. He called for immediate and collective efforts to protect the environment and urged everyone to contribute in their own small ways toward preserving nature.
