SHILLONG, OCT 11: The Congress staged a protest by lighting of dongmusas (traditional torches) on Saturday to express outrage over the recent murders of two children in the state.

The bodies of a 7-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were recovered under tragic circumstances, sparking widespread concern over law and order in Meghalaya.

The boy’s body was found at Mawpat on October 9, a day after he went missing from his Nongrah residence. The girl, meanwhile, was allegedly raped and murdered by a 22-year-old man in Ri Bhoi district.

Badwar expressed disappointment with the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong’s response to the recent crimes, stating that “it lacked sensitivity and understanding of the issues faced by ordinary people”.

He urged the government to take a holistic approach, involving various departments and stakeholders, to develop policies that address the root causes of these problems.

He emphasized that every child has the right to live, play, and grow in a safe environment, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure this.

Badwar called for a comprehensive policy to address the social and economic issues affecting families and children, and to promote a sense of belonging and responsibility among citizens.

He urged the government to work with various stakeholders, including local communities, schools, and churches, to develop a holistic approach to addressing these problems.

On the other hand, president of Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) Joplyn Scot Shylla, has called for stricter measures to address the root causes of such crimes by banning pornography sites and regulate online content accessible to children, citing its potential influence on their mindset and behavior.

Shylla also stressed the importance of introducing sex education in schools and promoting open discussions between parents and children to prevent such incidents.

She highlighted the need for improved public safety, pointing out that citizens, especially children, are vulnerable to crimes due to lack of security measures.

The Mahila Congress leader questioned the prioritization of safety, noting that while some individuals have access to secure transportation and protection, many others are forced to navigate public spaces without adequate security.

Shylla urged the government to install CCTVs in public areas and deploy police personnel effectively to prevent crimes.
