Shillong, Dec 8: “It is not every day that you have the Chief Minister here to interact with you. This is an opportunity to tell us your ideas, your challenges, and what more the government can do to support your aspirations,” Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma told Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) during an interactive session at Dkhiah West on Monday.
The Chief Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the first-phase hostel of the Ephatha Society in East Jaintia Hills, an institution working to build an inclusive and supportive environment for PwDs. Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla was also present at the programme.

During the event, Sangma distributed Two-Wheeler Handicap-Friendly Mobility aids and other assistive devices to beneficiaries. He said the feedback gathered from PwDs would shape stronger, more responsive policies across Meghalaya.
Announcing immediate steps, the Chief Minister said the approach road to the hostel would be taken up without delay and assured that the remaining facilities would be completed soon. He further committed support for the second phase, which will include livelihood programmes, skilling modules, framing activities and other initiatives proposed by the society.
Encouraging PwDs to stay confident, he said, “Do not feel inferior or think you are incompetent. We are here to support you, help you overcome challenges, and move forward in life.”
During the interaction, several PwDs shared their daily struggles, while others sought government assistance for their businesses and entrepreneurial ventures.
Established in December 2020, the Ephatha Society has been active in conducting surveys, seminars, vocational training and awareness programmes aimed at empowering PwDs. Its Inclusive Training Centre—currently under construction—will offer specialised facilities for children and adults, including tailoring and other skill-development courses.
The Chief Minister also felicitated outstanding and dedicated PwDs for their achievements.
