Shillong, April 10: Conrad K. Sangma on Friday felicitated toppers of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination 2026 from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region, underlining what he described as a steady improvement in the state’s education outcomes.
The felicitation programme, held in Shillong, was attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, senior officials including Commissioner & Secretary (Education) Vijay Kumar Mantri, along with parents and teachers.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma recalled concerns over previously low SSLC pass percentages, noting that the situation had been “very disturbing” in earlier years. He, however, said recent trends indicate progress.
“It was very sad to see the low pass percentage, but things have started improving. I am positive that in the long run we will be able to bring about significant changes in the education scenario,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the state government remains focused on strengthening the education system, with visible results beginning to emerge.
Congratulating the toppers, the Chief Minister said the felicitation was meant to recognise their hard work and perseverance. He encouraged students to remain disciplined and committed while pursuing their ambitions.
“Follow your heart and passion in life, yet remain humble and grounded,” he advised.
Sangma also announced that a similar felicitation programme for toppers from the Garo Hills region will be held in Tura on April 18.
The event comes amid ongoing efforts by the Meghalaya government to improve school education outcomes, with officials pointing to gradual gains in performance indicators in recent years.
