CM attends Tura Natya Samity centenary celebration, announces ₹25 lakh aid

TURA, May 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday attended the centenary celebration of Tura Natya Samity at Lower Babupara in Tura, marking 100 years of the institution’s contribution to art, theatre and cultural preservation in the region.

The programme marked the beginning of the year-long centenary celebrations of the cultural institution, established in 1926. The event featured the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, unveiling of a commemorative plaque and release of ceremonial balloons by the chief minister.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma congratulated the members and well-wishers of the Samity and paid tribute to generations of artists, office bearers and members who contributed to the institution’s growth over the last century.

Describing Tura Natya Samity as “a guardian of heritage and a living witness to history”, the chief minister said the institution had witnessed major historical phases, including British India, India’s Independence and the formation of Meghalaya, while continuing its cultural mission.

Highlighting the Samity’s contribution to theatre, music, dance and literary activities, he said the institution had played a significant role in nurturing generations of artists and preserving indigenous traditions in the Garo Hills region.

Sangma also stressed the growing importance of culture and creative industries in Meghalaya’s development. Referring to the state’s music and entertainment sector, he said Shillong was emerging as the “Music Capital of India” and noted that Meghalaya had become a major destination for international concerts and cultural events.

The chief minister said the government, through initiatives such as the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project, was supporting over 7,000 artists with performance honorariums. He also announced plans to establish a Film Institute in Shillong and a Music Institute in Tura to strengthen the state’s creative ecosystem.

During the programme, Sangma announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for infrastructure development at Tura Natya Samity.

Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Vibhor Aggarwal and Centenary Celebration Committee chairman Pranab Bhowmik also addressed the gathering and highlighted the Samity’s role in promoting cultural unity and artistic excellence in the region.

A commemorative souvenir documenting the history and legacy of the institution was released during the event. The programme also featured welcome songs, cultural performances and group dances celebrating India’s unity in diversity.

Founded in 1926, Tura Natya Samity remains one of the oldest cultural institutions in the region and continues to promote theatre, art and cultural integration in Meghalaya.
