SHILLONG, SEPT 5: The BJP Meghalaya on Saturday termed the alleged insult to the Holy Bible by Sanjay Sharma as a “distasteful” and “heinous” act and said the party has no place for people with a communal mindset.

BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said the party was pained by the incident that has come to light in the state.

“A distasteful incident of insulting the Holy Bible has recently come to light in our state and BJP Meghalaya is deeply pained by the act of this individual named Sanjay Sharma,” Kharkrang said in a statement.

He said the BJP stands for positive secularism and integral humanism.

“As a party, BJP has always believed in, practiced and preached the principles of ‘positive secularism’ and ‘integral humanism’. Secularism is an integral part of BJP’s culture, a way of life demonstrated by the Honourable Prime Minister himself who regularly attends mass on Christmas Eve,” he said.

“Such irresponsible acts, reeking of a reprehensible mindset only discredits the party’s ingrained values and brings disrepute to our Prime Minister himself,” he added.

Kharkrang said, “We would like to make it amply clear that such people with narrow, communal mindsets have no place in the BJP. Insult to the Bible is as heinous an act as vandalising Swami Vivekananda’s statue.”

The party has urged the authorities to act against Sharma.

“State BJP urges the authorities to take note and initiate punitive action as prescribed in the law against the culprit,” he said.

On Sharma’s association with the party, Kharkrang clarified that he no longer holds any post.

“BJP Meghalaya would like to clarify that Sanjay Sharma holds no designation in the party having already resigned on the 8th of May 2026 from his post,” he said.

He added that the party is verifying his primary membership.

“The party is investigating if he still remains a primary member of the party and, if yes, strict disciplinary action will be taken,” Kharkrang said.
