SHILLONG, FEB 28: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has flagged excess payment of COVID-19 compensation to building and other construction workers in Meghalaya, citing “lack of proper verification” of beneficiary data.

The report, tabled in the Assembly on Friday, reveals that ₹1.34 crore was disbursed in excess due to multiple credits to beneficiaries with same registration numbers, bank accounts, or names.

“Audit analysis revealed deviations from the Government notification leading to excess payment… Such excess payments were noticed in all districts,” the CAG report states.

The errors included 4 cases of multiple credits to beneficiaries with same registration numbers, 16 cases of multiple credits to beneficiaries with same bank accounts and 262 cases of multiple credits to beneficiaries with same names.

The CAG report highlights a financial implication of ₹20,000 in 4 cases with same registration numbers and ₹80,000 in 16 cases with same bank accounts.
