SHILLONG, AUG 27: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the price of cabbage, which had crashed to Rs 2 per kg prompting farmers to distribute it for free, has now recovered to Rs 20-25 per kg.
The issue was raised in the Assembly by VPP president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.
Intervening during the reply by Agriculture Minister Timothy D Shira, the chief minister said the dip in July is a recurring trend observed over the last 10 years.
“We have always seen there is a dip in July. Our assessment is that supply from other NE states is quite high during this period. We are looking at the entire supply chain, including Guwahati and other markets,” Sangma said.
“We cannot say the system has collapsed based on one day. Increased supply from other parts and floods might have led to the crash, but now it is Rs 20-25 per kg,” he added.
Sangma said while some factors are beyond the government’s control, the situation is being closely analysed.
Earlier, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Timothy D Shira said the department had taken note of the incident.
“I was aware of the situation and had called a meeting of the agriculture department. The price has become normal now and whatever the member suggested is noted,” Shira said.
