Bodies of Manipur violence victims, kept in morgues for 8 months, sent to respective Districts: Govt Sources

Imphal, Dec 14: After Supreme Court direction, several dead bodies of victims of Manipur since May 3, lying in the morgues in Imphal valley region for past eight months have been shifted to respective hill district for a dignified burial.

“From early morning the dead bodies were shifted out of the Morgues under central forces heavy security cover, airlifted from Imphal by Indian Air force chopper to Kuki-Zo tribal dominated Kangpokpi district,” said an official source.

Similar, operation has been planned for the worst hit Churachandpur district.

On November 28, 2023, the Supreme Court had directed the Manipur government to make proper arrangements for the dignified burial of people who lost their lives in the Manipur violence.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, passed directions based on a report prepared by the committee led by Justice Gita Mital.

A committee formed by the Supreme Court on August 7, 2023, which apprised the Bench that there are 175 dead bodies without burials in the state. Of these, 169 were identified bodies, 81 of these bodies were claimed by the relatives or the next of kin, 88 were unclaimed and the remaining six bodies were unidentified in the mortuaries.

The report claimed that the Manipur government has recognised nine sites for cremations or burials.
