Shillong, May 25: A routine evening patrol by Sohra Police Station’s mobile unit turned into a dramatic chase on Saturday evening, culminating in the apprehension of a Bangladeshi national and two individuals accused of facilitating his illegal movement. The incident unfolded near the picturesque Seven Sisters Falls Viewpoint, a popular tourist destination.

Police sources said that at approximately 4 PM, a silver Maruti A-Star bearing registration number AS 01 AP 0928 was signalled to stop at a naka (checkpoint). However, the vehicle allegedly disregarded the police instruction and sped past the checkpoint, prompting a pursuit by the police team.

The chase concluded when the vehicle was successfully intercepted near the Seven Sisters Falls Viewpoint. The driver and occupants were immediately taken to Sohra Police Station for questioning.

During interrogation, it was revealed that one of the occupants was Robiul Islam, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi national from Tengra Khali, Paderhat, Pirojpur, Bangladesh. Islam, who reportedly works as an electrician in Bangalore, admitted that he wanted to return to Bangladesh. Police suspect that he has been using this route regularly.

Further investigation led to the apprehension of two individuals identified as touts, Sujit Hajong (32) and Ravi Singh (38), both residents of Ichamati Bazaar, East Khasi Hills. They are accused of facilitating Islam’s cross-border movement.

A case has been registered under The Foreigners Act, and interrogation of all three individuals is ongoing to gather more information.
