Guwahati, Feb 20: In response to the growing demand from residents of the three districts in Assam’s Barak Valley, Bangladesh is set to open a visa centre in Assam. The move aims to facilitate smoother travel for individuals seeking entry into Bangladesh.

Ruhul Amin, Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commissioner in Guwahati, announced the decision, highlighting the significant demand for visas from Barak Valley, which comprises Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts.

“The date of opening of such a facility is yet to be decided, but it will done soon. Applications will be received and visas for a trip to Bangladesh will be issued from here,” Amin said.

The upcoming centre will solely function to process visa application, facilitating smoother travel arrangements to Bangladesh.

Earlier, a market was proposed to be set up on 500 bighas of land on the bank of the Surma river at Katigorah in Cachar district.

In response to this, Amin informed that the proposal will be examined, and hopefully, there will be a positive outcome soon, he added.

The Bangladesh government was considering opening two such markets to establish goodwill and coordination among the people living in the border areas of the two countries, he said.
