Guwahati, May 24: Two staff members of Sribhumi Central Jail in Assam have been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman inside a jail residential quarter. The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 AM on Saturday.
The accused have been identified as Hareswar Kalita and Gajendra Kalita, both employed at Sribhumi Central Jail. According to Sribhumi, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Pranabjyoti Kalita, the victim was not an inmate but was brought into the jail quarters by the accused.
“We received information that two jail staff of Sribhumi Central Jail sexually assaulted a girl in the jail quarters. The incident was reported around 1:30 AM, and two police officers from the reserve force immediately rushed to the spot. The jail superintendent was already present when they arrived,” Kalita stated.
He further added, “We informed the local police, who came and arrested both individuals. A case has been registered, and a suo motu case has been taken up. The victim has been sent for medical examination, and we are investigating the case thoroughly.”
Authorities have assured a comprehensive investigation and strict action against those found guilty.
