Guwahati, Jan 13: In order to boost urea production in the region, and for the country in general, the Namrup Har Karkhana Suraksha Aikyo Manch has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention for the setting up of Namrup-IV plant following decrease in production in the existing 2 units of the plant.

Tileswar Bora, the working president of Namrup Fertilizer Aikyo Manch, on Saturday said the condition of BVFCL’s third plant is not good anymore despite being the only plant producing urea in northeast. “We want intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the revival of the industry. If it remains like same then very soon the Namrup third plant will also be shut down,” he cautioned.

The Namrup-3 plant set up in 1987 has been struggling due to outdated technologies and machineries. There has been huge decline in the production of urea in the two units in recent years because of which the fertilizer plant is unable to cater to the huge demand of urea in the country. The plant currently produces 700-800 metric tonnes of urea per day. In 1986, the ageing Namrup-I plant was phased out by the authorities.

In 2018, the Centre had approved in-principle the proposal for setting up of the fourth unit at an estimated cost of Rs 4,500 crore. However, as on date, no progress has been made in the project. Once considered among the finest and profitable fertilizer industries of the country, BVFCL which was established in 1969 has been struggling to stay afloat due to declining production over the years.
