Guwahati, June 19: Five people were killed in a landslide in Southern Assam’s Karimganj district due to heavy rain on Tuesday.

According to reports, all five of them were the members of same family. The incident took place in the Badarpur area of Gainachora village. The district has a border with Bangladesh.

The deceased has been identified as- Roymun Nessa(55), Sahida Khanam(18), Jahida Khanam(16), Hamida Khanam(11), Mehdi Hassan(3).

According to police, Roymun Nessa was the wife of Abdul Karim and when the incident occurred Abdul was not in his house.

Meanwhile, SDRF has been carrying out rescue operations in the area.

“We got to know around 12 pm last night that landslides occurred in our area. We rushed to the place and found that a whole family residing in the area had died due to landslides. All the villagers along with SDRF were involved in the rescue operation and four of them were taken from the landslide. All four of them were dead. The landslides occurred due to heavy rain in the area for the past several days,” said a villager.

On the other hand, due to the rising water levels of the Longai and Kushiyara rivers, the Karimganj district administration has ordered the closure of all educational institutions (both Govt. and Private) in the district on June 19 – 20.

The decision has been taken in response to the worsening flood conditions across the district. Incessant rainfall has caused significant waterlogging and flood waters have entered various school and college campuses in the district.

Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav said, “The flood situation is severe in Karimganj district as all the three rivers are flowing over the danger levels. We have set up 30 relief camps and a total of 1.5 lakh population were affected due to the flood. No breach had happened but we are strongly monitoring things and if the water subsides, we will take all precautionary measures,”.

“We have decided to close down all government and private educational institutions due to rising water levels. To date, the SDRF-NDRF have rescued 250 people,” Yadav said.
