Guwahati, Dec 20: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday criticised the BJP-led government and demanded a white paper on the central funds allocated for flood and erosion control in the state.
Gogoi’s remarks come during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Assam to inaugurate a series of development projects.
He said floods and riverbank erosion continue to bring devastation to communities every year, displacing families and forcing thousands into temporary camps. Despite being a longstanding problem, vast tracts of land are still lost annually to erosion.
“We want the Prime Minister and the central government to seriously address the issue of floods and erosion in Assam. The Centre should release a white paper clearly stating how much funding it has allocated for flood and erosion control,” Gogoi said.
He also demanded a comparative assessment of central assistance sanctioned for disaster-hit states such as Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.
“We want to know how much funding those states received during similar calamities,” he added, questioning the extent of the funds actually released to Assam so far.
Earlier, on October 7, the Union government approved additional central assistance of ₹313.69 crore for Assam to support flood and landslide recovery in 2024.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks his first trip to the state ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
