Guwahati, March 27: The BJP has geared up for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, but its leaders are steering clear of predicting the exact number of seats the NDA will win in 2026.

In 2016, the BJP won 60 seats. In 2021, it initially secured 60 seats, which later increased to 64.

Ahead of the 2021 polls, the party had given a clarion call to win over 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, when repeatedly asked about the NDA’s seat tally this time, has maintained that the BJP is targeting over 50 percent vote share. “We will get an unprecedented and historic mandate this time,” he said.

For the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP is contesting 90 seats, while its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)—are contesting 26 and 11 seats respectively. One seat will witness a “friendly contest” between the BJP and AGP.

The BJP is eyeing a third consecutive term in Assam and remains confident of forming the NDA government.

Assam will go to the polls in a single phase on April 9, 2026.
