Dibrugarh, Dec 16: Former MLA of Arunachal Pradesh, Yumsem Matey, was shot dead by a group of militants at Rahu village under Lazu police station in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday evening.

According to sources, the former MLA was attending a social function at Rahu village in Tirap district on Saturday evening when a group of youth whisked him away near the Indo-Myanmar border and shot him dead.

Matey was the Khonsa (West) MLA from 2009 to 2014 under the Congress ticket, and in 2015 he joined the BJP.

He was the candidate for the upcoming legislative assembly elections for the Khonsa (West) assembly seat.

“The former MLA was taken to the Indo-Myanmar border and shot dead by the militant. But which militant group has done this is not yet known,” said a source.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched a massive man-hunt to nab the militants.

In 2019, West Khonsa MLA Tirong Aboh and his 10 supporters were ambushed by the militants at Bogapani village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district.

The Tirap, Longding, and Changlang (TLC) of Arunachal Pradesh has been a disturbed area, and AFSPA has been extended to this part of the state by the MHA.
