Shillong, March 25: In a significant move to regulate the growing coaching sector, the Meghalaya government has made it mandatory for all private coaching centres to register with the Education Department under newly notified rules.

The directive follows the notification of the Meghalaya Registration of Private Coaching Centre Rules, 2026, aimed at bringing both online and offline coaching institutes under a formal regulatory framework, according to an official release issued by the Deputy Commissioner’s office, East Khasi Hills district.

Under the new rules, coaching centres will be required to adhere to student protection norms and establish structured grievance redressal mechanisms. The government said the regulations are designed to safeguard students’ welfare while ensuring accountability in the rapidly expanding private coaching industry.

The rules have been framed in compliance with directions from the Supreme Court in the case of Sukdeb Saha vs. State of Andhra Pradesh & Others (2025), which called for stricter oversight of private coaching institutions.

Officials said all coaching centres operating in East Khasi Hills must register in accordance with the provisions of the new rules, with authorities urging strict compliance.
