Guwahati, Mar 9: A man from Assam who had been evading arrest for over four years after escaping from custody in a theft case has been apprehended in Kerala.
Ranjan Borgohain, son of Kamal Borgohain and a resident of Duliajan in the Dibrugarh district, Assam, was originally arrested in connection with a theft case registered under Khanapara PS Case No. 52(11)2020 under Section 381 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, on November 20, 2020, he managed to escape from custody and has since been on the run.
Earlier this week, authorities traced Borgohain to Kerala, where he had worked as a labourer in an industrial area in Perumbavoor. Acting swiftly, Assam Police alerted Kerala Police and formally requested assistance from the Ernakulam District Police Chief.
On March 7, 2025, the Ernakulam Police successfully apprehended Borgohain. Subsequently, a team from the Ri-Bhoi District Police formally arrested him and obtained a transit remand from the local court.
Borgohain is now being brought back to Meghalaya and will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Nongpoh today.
Authorities have expressed their gratitude to the Kerala Police for their prompt and effective response in apprehending the absconder.
