Shillong, Sept 07: A day after former MLA from Mawsynram, HM Shangpliang, resigned from BJP citing nepotism, the leader on Thursday announced that he would be joining the National People’s Party (NPP).

He is set to join the NPP on September 13.

He told reporters on Thursday that he is joining the NPP without any conditions. He said expressed that he is ready to shoulder any responsibility that is bestowed on him by NPP high command, once he joins the party.

NPP is currently led by Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya. The party was accorded the status of a national party in 2019, becoming the first political party from Northeastern India to have attained this status.

Shangpliang also refused to comment to a query if Lok Sabha elections in 2024 was the major reason to join NPP as it is speculated that he is eyeing the Lok Sabha ticket from Shillong. He, however, said, “I did not see any better future in the State BJP. Though I would have loved to remain in the party but there were lot of other issues. There were internal conflicts, there was nepotism, which undermine the growth of the party. If we have to work for the welfare of the people then such things should not find room such as internal conflicts and nepotism, if we are there for the welfare of people.”

Shangpliang, in his resignation letter dated September 6, 2023, addressed to the Meghalaya BJP President, had mentioned his differences with the state party president and alleged nepotism within the state BJP under the present leadership.

“…though I would have liked to remain and serve the party in the right earnest, I understand that as long as nepotism prevails within the rank and file of the State BJP continues under the leadership of the State president, it will hinder all possible steps of the dedicated and loyal party men to freely exercise their minds and grow in the party,” he said.
