Shillong, Oct. 17: More than seven decades after she donated land for a hospital in Nongstoin, retired health official Dr. A. Marwein has been honoured by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, as the institution she helped establish begins a new chapter as a full-fledged Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Hospital.
Sangma presented a memento to Marwein in recognition of her contribution to public healthcare, acknowledging a gesture of generosity in the early 1950s that continues to benefit families in the region.
Marwein, a former Director of Health Services (Research), donated land for the establishment of the hospital at Nongstoin, laying the foundation for a healthcare institution that has now been inaugurated as an MCH facility.
Her contribution, made at a time when access to healthcare in the region was limited, has left a lasting legacy. The hospital’s new role in maternal and child healthcare brings renewed significance to the land she gave for public service.
The Meghalaya Health Department, in a social media post, expressed its appreciation for Marwein’s contribution, describing it as an enduring example of how individual generosity can strengthen public healthcare and improve the well-being of generations.
The inauguration of the MCH Hospital marks a milestone for Nongstoin and surrounding communities, while the recognition of Marwein highlights the role of local contributions in building healthcare infrastructure in Meghalaya.
