Shillong, Oct 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday inaugurated the state’s first High-Performance Sports Science Centre in Shillong, marking a step towards strengthening sports infrastructure and supporting athletes through scientific training, performance assessment and injury management.
The centre has been established in collaboration with Abhinav Futuristics Pvt. Ltd. (AFL), an enterprise led by Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist. The initiative follows an earlier proposal by AFL to state authorities during the signing of the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP).
The facility brings together performance analytics, physical assessment, specialised training and rehabilitation services under one roof. It is equipped with tools for biometric and biomechanical assessments, motion analysis and strength testing to help athletes and coaches identify areas for improvement.
In a post in X, Sangma said, “Our vision is to build a strong sporting ecosystem, from grassroots talent identification to elite performance, giving our athletes the tools to compete with the best in the world. The champions of tomorrow begin with the foundations we build today!”
