Shillong, Aug 21: Petrol pumps across Shillong witnessed long queues on Friday evening as residents rushed to refuel their vehicles amid rumours of a possible disruption in petrol supplies to Meghalaya.
The rush came as the road blockade along the Guwahati–Shillong highway entered its second day, while groups in Assam reportedly restricted the movement of goods-laden and passenger vehicles between the two states.
The situation was further fuelled by messages circulating on social media claiming that the Petroleum Mazdoor Union had decided to halt the supply of petrol to Meghalaya.
By Friday evening, long queues of vehicles were witnessed at almost every petrol pump across Shillong. At several locations, the queues stretched onto the main roads, causing severe traffic congestion in areas surrounding the fuel stations.
The reports of a possible disruption in fuel supplies have triggered panic among vehicle owners, with many rushing to fill their tanks amid uncertainty over the situation.
