SHILLONG, JUN 21: The Shillong-Dawki road has been closed to all public and vehicular traffic after a major landslide cut off the highway near Laitlyngkot village in East Khasi Hills district on Sunday.
In an order, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said a major landslide occurred along the Shillong-Dawki road at Chainage 25+200, ahead of the main Laitlyngkot village, resulting in a complete road cut-off.
The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has assessed that repair and restoration will take a few days, prompting the administration to shut the road with immediate effect in the interest of public safety until further notice.
The administration has urged commuters, including tourists heading to Dawki, to avoid the affected stretch beyond Laitlyngkot village and instead take alternate routes through Shillong-Sohra-Sohbar-Dawki or via Shillong-Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki.
Motorists have been asked to follow diversion instructions issued by Police, Traffic and NHIDCL personnel on the ground, plan journeys with additional travel time, and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth traffic management.
With monsoon conditions continuing across the region, the DC also advised travellers to stay updated on weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department and to dial 112 for any emergency assistance.
The administration expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the sudden closure.
