SHILLONG, MAY 29: The state government is actively addressing the situation in Lapangap and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has begun discussions with his Assam counterpart, UDP chief and Cabinet Minister Metbah Lyngdoh said Friday.
The border village has seen tension for the past few weeks.
“This issue has cropped up couple of weeks now,” Lyngdoh said.
“As far as home department is concerned, that has been taken care as law-and-order issues that is there in the state.”
He said he had been informed of CM-level talks on the matter.
“As I was informed that today the Chief Minister has taken the steps to initiate discussions with the chief minister of Assam,” he said. “I am sure that is happening.”
Lyngdoh called it a border dispute affecting local residents. “With regards to the ongoing issue there in Lapangap that is a problem that the people are facing,” he said.
“So the role of the government is to see that whatever issues are there that has to be sorted out because it is the border dispute.”
He added that the government has been working to protect border communities. “The government as a whole has been taking a lot of initiative with regards to resolving the issues of the people in the border, ensuring the safety and there should not be any kind of harassment or trouble created in that areas,” Lyngdoh said.
Lyngdoh said he had raised the issue with the Chief Minister two days ago. “Yes, I have discussed with him also day before yesterday,” he said. “But he have already taken initiative and that is the good part of the Chief Minister that he himself has taken those steps.”
