SHILLONG, MAY 26: The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has thanked the Narendra Modi-led Central government for conferring the Padma Shri on Hally War for his work in building and nurturing living root bridges, calling it a “long overdue recognition” for the state.
“The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Central government has yet again acknowledged the contribution of Meghalaya to the national cause by awarding the coveted Padma Shri to Bah Hally War for his dedication towards building and nurturing living root bridges, a heritage as well as symbol of our state,” BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang said in a statement on Tuesday.
Kharkrang said the award had “brought into spotlight Meghalaya’s ancient wisdom and an engineering technique that creates no pollution.”
“As we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Central team, we are certain that consequent to Mr. War’s fame and recognition, our state’s unique nature friendly approach will become a role model for the entire nation, creating a sustainable future for India,” the statement added.
The party noted that War’s Padma Shri “comes in quick succession to Kong Silbi Passah’s Padma Shri, conferred to her in 2024.”
It also referred to the Prime Minister’s recent ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, where he mentioned Meghalaya’s Eri Silk, giving the traditional fabric the title of non-violent silk owing to the distinctive nature of harvest.
“Meghalaya’s living root bridge technique, rich folk culture and silk are reflections of ancient knowledge, prudence and skills. However, the state’s rich heritage had until now been systematically ignored by previous Central Governments,” Kharkrang said.
“The Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and the Central team on the other hand continue to recognize the state’s impressive legacy. Reason why, we extend our gratitude yet again,” he added.
The Padma Shri is India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
