SHILLONG, MAY 25: Sohra’s Dympep will host the North East’s first skywalk, with 20% of the Rs 51-crore project already completed since work began last November, NPP legislator Gavin Miguel Mylliem said Monday.
The 40-meter-long skywalk is expected to be completed in late 2027 and is aimed at driving tourist footfall to Dympep and adjoining areas.
“The work started in the month of November last year. The progress of the work is ongoing. According to the reports from the department, the ongoing progress is 20% till date,” Mylliem said.
Calling it “one of its kind,” the Sohra MLA added, “I am very confident that once completed this project will ultimately boost tourism in the Dympep area and adjoining areas… It is one of the first in the North East. I think we will be able to attract many tourists when they come to this part of the area.”
Mylliem also said the Nohkalikai tourism project under the PM-Divine scheme received sanction in November last year. With a project cost of around Rs 38 crore, the tendering process is complete and work will commence shortly.
“The project cost is around Rs 38 crore and the tendering process has just been completed and it has just been allotted to the contractor. I think they will be starting the work in the few days to come,” he said.
On questions of ecological impact, Mylliem maintained that safeguards were built into the planning stage.
“While preparing the detailed project report (DPR) consultants have taken all those things into consideration because we do understand that in these kinds of scheme, the PM-Divine scheme and many other schemes, the environment part is taken into consideration so I don’t think they will have any impact on the environment,” he stated.
