SHILLONG, MAY 20: East Garo Hills police arrested a man on Wednesday for allegedly posting sexually explicit content targeting women on social media platforms, according to an official press release.

The accused, Newbard M Sangma alias Betuel of A·chak Jangkigre, Williamnagar, was taken into custody after authorities found he was operating a Facebook account where he “uploaded sexually explicit content targeting women/females with vulgar language.”

Williamnagar Police have registered a case against him.

The charges include Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

District Superintendent of Police SA Rynjah said the probe began after police received inputs on the accused’s online activity.

“The investigation was initiated after authorities received inputs that he had been habitually uploading vulgar content through his Facebook account and YouTube channel, which are accessible to the public,” he stated.

Police said the content was reviewed and found to be in violation of law. “The recent Facebook uploads were found to be obscene in nature and prima facie attracting provisions under Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 BNS and R/W Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000.”

In its advisory, East Garo Hills District police noted that “under the Information Technology Act, uploading, transmitting, or publishing sexually explicit content on any social media platform is a cognizable cyber offence.”

The SP has urged victims to come forward. “Aggrieved persons may report such matters to the Police through proper channel. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) may also be used to lodge complaint(s), as it serves as the official platform for securely reporting instances of online obscenity, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and cyber-blackmail.”
