SHILLONG, MAY 12: East Jaintia Hills Police have appealed to the public for information to help identify an unidentified male body recovered from an abandoned coal mine at Mulait Bri-Sumer village last week.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Rasgonia on Tuesday said the body, found in a decomposed state, has been kept at the Civil Hospital, Khliehriat morgue for identification and claim by relatives.
“The general public is hereby requested to come forward and provide any information if they have any knowledge of the deceased, his family members and relatives,” Rasgonia said.
The body was spotted floating in a water-filled abandoned coal mine on May 9.

A police team from Mooriap BOP rushed to the spot and found the body in a semi-submerged condition about 50 feet below the surface. With assistance from the SDRF rescue team, the body was retrieved from the mine.
“After observing all legal formalities, the dead body was forwarded to Civil Hospital, Khliehriat to ascertain the actual cause of death,” Rasgonia said.
Police said the deceased remains unidentified due to the state of decomposition. Anyone with information about the man or his family has been urged to contact East Jaintia Hills Police. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
