Shillong, May 12: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday strongly condemned remarks made by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the council in Haflong, accusing him of making “false, malicious and politically motivated” statements against the party.

In a sharply worded statement, the NPP objected to Garlosa allegedly describing the party as a “B-team” of another political formation, calling the allegation “completely false” and an attempt to undermine the party’s independent political identity.

The party said such remarks reflected “a deeply insecure and petty political mindset” and accused the NCHAC leader of indulging in “conspiracy theories, manufactured narratives and cheap propaganda” instead of engaging in democratic political discourse.

“The National People’s Party is not, has never been, and will never be anyone’s ‘B-team’,” the statement said.

The NPP asserted that it is a national political party with its own ideology, leadership and organisational structure, and said any suggestion that it functions under the direction of another party was “insulting to the intelligence of the electorate.”

Clarifying its position on the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the party said the decision to field Daniel Langthasa from the Haflong (ST) constituency was taken independently after internal consultations and was based on the aspirations of the people of Dima Hasao and the protection of tribal rights under the Sixth Schedule.

“There was no discussion, consultation or political arrangement whatsoever with the BJP or any other political formation regarding this decision,” the statement added.

The NPP also rejected what it termed as “reckless references” allegedly made by Garlosa involving Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K. Sangma, calling them “outright fabrication” and “defamatory.”

Accusing the NCHAC leadership of diverting attention from governance and development issues in Dima Hasao, the party said the people of the hill district “deserve better than politics of misinformation and character assassination.”

The NPP has demanded that Garlosa retract his statements and issue an unconditional public apology within 48 hours through the same media channels where the remarks were made.

The party warned that failure to do so would compel it to explore legal remedies, including defamation proceedings against him in his personal capacity.

“The people of Dima Hasao are politically aware, mature and discerning. They will see through such desperate attempts at misinformation,” the statement added.
