SHILLONG, MAY 5: The Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills has issued a public advisory mandating registration of all migrant workers in the district under the Meghalaya Identification and Registration (Safety & Security) Act, 2020, warning of penalties including fines and imprisonment for violations.

The advisory states that the measure is intended to ensure safety, maintain public order, and protect the rights of both workers and residents.

“A migrant worker refers to any person not belonging to or domiciled in Meghalaya who is employed in any establishment. All such workers must register and obtain a valid registration card,” the advisory said.

Employers have been made responsible for ensuring registration through the online portal http://www.investmeghalaya.gov.in by submitting documents such as Aadhaar, EPIC, or PAN card along with a photograph.

Alternatively, registration may be done offline at the office of the Labour Department or the Deputy Labour Commissioner, East Garo Hills.

The DC cautioned that failure to comply will attract penalties.

“Employers who do not register workers may be fined between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 1,00,000, and repeated violations may lead to imprisonment. Unregistered workers may also be fined,” the advisory stated.

It further added, “Any harassment or discrimination against migrant workers is punishable under law.”

“All concerned are requested to comply strictly for safety and legality,” the advisory concluded.
