Guwahati, Mar 15: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, taking the total number of announced nominees to 65 for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
The party had earlier released its first list of candidates on March 3.
In the second list, the Congress has kept 15 seats aside for its alliance partners — Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC).
The list features several sitting MLAs, including Rekibuddin Ahmed from Chamaria, Wazed Ali Choudhury from Birsing Jarua, and Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam from Goalpara East. Former Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque has also been fielded from the Mandia constituency.
Meanwhile, the Raijor Dal released its second list of candidates on Saturday, announcing nominees for the Naoboicha and Dhemaji seats. The party had earlier declared 11 candidates in its first list on March 4.
Raijor Dal and the Congress had held multiple rounds of discussions to forge a broader alliance of like-minded parties against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies. However, the talks eventually collapsed due to disagreements over seat-sharing.
A political analyst noted that some Congress leaders are reportedly unhappy with the candidates announced in the first and second lists.
“Dibrugarh is considered the second capital of Assam and one of the most prominent Assembly constituencies. However, this time the Congress has not fielded any candidate from the seat. Dibrugarh, once a Congress bastion, has been left without a Congress nominee,” the analyst said.
