SHILLONG, MAR 9: The administration of West Garo Hills on Monday imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew in 37 villages identified as “sensitive areas” in the district after protest by NGOs opposing non‑tribal participation in GHADC nominations.

District magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal invoked Section 163 of BNSS, barring assemblies of five or more persons and weapons in 17 villages under Hallidayganj and 20 villages under Phulbari police stations— while filing of nomination for the April 10 council election from March 9–16.

The order cited fears of vehicle obstruction, intimidation and communal tension in mixed‑population plain‑belt areas.

“Any violation of this order shall attract penal provisions under section 223 of the BNS and any other relevant sections as deemed fit and appropriate,” Aggarwal stated in the order.
