Meghalaya Governor welcomes Karnataka media, highlights State’s unique culture, growth potential

SHILLONG, FEB 3: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on Tuesday interacted with a media delegation from Karnataka during a courtesy meeting held at Lok Bhavan, Shillong.

The delegation is on a Press Tour to Meghalaya organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, aimed at providing media professionals with firsthand exposure to the State’s culture, heritage and development initiatives.

As Vijayashankar hails from Mysuru, Karnataka, the interaction assumed special significance.

The Governor engaged with the delegation in Kannada, creating a warm and familiar atmosphere and enabling a free and meaningful exchange with the visiting journalists.

During the interaction, the Governor briefed the delegation on the unique socio-cultural fabric of Meghalaya, highlighting its distinctive matrilineal system, rich tribal traditions, and the harmonious coexistence of diverse communities.

He emphasized how these traditional values continue to shape the social and cultural identity of the State.

Vijayashankar also elaborated on Meghalaya’s strengths and potential in agriculture, tourism, and allied sectors, with particular emphasis on sustainable development and eco-friendly tourism.

He underlined the importance of promoting indigenous products while ensuring environmental conservation and inclusive growth.

The Governor felicitated the media delegation with Ryndia, the traditional handwoven fabric of Meghalaya.

He explained the significance of Ahimsa silk, from which Ryndia is made, noting that the silk is produced without killing the silkworm, reflecting ethical practices, sustainability, and environmental consciousness deeply embedded in local traditions.

The Governor further highlighted Lakadong turmeric, one of Meghalaya’s globally acclaimed agricultural products, known for its exceptionally high curcumin content. He spoke about efforts to promote Lakadong turmeric as a premium organic product and its role in enhancing farmers’ income and strengthening the rural economy.

The media delegation expressed their appreciation for the warm hospitality and insightful interaction, stating that the Press Tour to Meghalaya provided them with valuable firsthand understanding of the State’s culture, traditions, and development initiatives.

The interaction is expected to contribute to wider national awareness about Meghalaya through informed and responsible media coverage.
