Guwahati, Dec 26: Assam Police have arrested four persons in connection with the vandalism at St Mary’s English School in Panigaon under Belsor Police Station in Nalbari district. The incident occurred on December 24, officials said.
According to the Nalbari district administration, the school’s principal, Fr Baiju Sebastian, lodged a written complaint stating that around 2.30 pm on December 24, unidentified miscreants unlawfully entered the school premises and vandalised the campus. The attackers damaged outer decorations, serial lights, flowerpots and other items, several of which were also set on fire, causing loss of property.
Based on the complaint, Belsor Police registered Case No. 116/2025 under Sections 329(3), 326(f), 189(2), 351(2), 324(3), 324(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Sub-Inspector Chanakya Das has been entrusted with the investigation.
Police confirmed that the following accused have been arrested in connection with the case: Bhaskar Deka (34), District Secretary, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, son of Sri Narayan Chandra Deka, resident of Balilecha village, Nalbari district, Manash Jyoti Patgiri (32), Vice President, VHP, son of late Mohan Patgiri, resident of Pub-Majdia village, Nalbari district, Biju Dutta (34), Assistant Secretary, VHP, son of late Kulen Chandra Dutta, resident of Telesia village, Nalbari district and Nayan Talukdar (37), District Convenor, Bajrang Dal, son of late Bhadra Kanta Talukdar, resident of Digheli village, Nalbari district
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests and said that Assam Police acted promptly in the matter. He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and communal harmony, and to ensuring the safety of all educational institutions and citizens across the state.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events and ascertain whether any other persons were involved in the incident.
