Shillong, Sept 15: The Hid Foundation, Shillong, has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. D.D. Lapang.
Dr. Lapang was a distinguished statesman whose public service career spanned several decades. He served the State five times as Chief Minister, twice as Deputy Chief Minister, ten times as Cabinet Minister, and twice as Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, in addition to holding several other important responsibilities.
“From his early years as a student leader in the Hill State Movement, Dr. Lapang played a significant role in shaping Meghalaya’s political and social landscape. His contributions to rural education and his pivotal role in the creation of Ri-Bhoi District in 1992 remain lasting legacies. He is fondly remembered as the Founding Father of Ri-Bhoi,” the organisation said in a statement.
For over thirteen years, Dr. Lapang extended valuable guidance to the Hid Foundation as a mentor and advisor. His passing is a profound loss to the people of Meghalaya and to all who had the privilege of working with him.
The organisation extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and followers of Dr. Lapang.
