Shillong, July 15: A powerful storm that swept through parts of Umling C&RD Block on Monday afternoon left behind a trail of destruction, causing major damage to homes and farmlands in Umdapdumu and Umdaprangi villages.
The storm struck around 2 PM, with strong winds tearing through the area, damaging more than 20 houses, along with betel leaf plantations, banana plants, and other crops. The sudden weather event has caused significant distress to the affected families, many of whom rely on farming for their livelihood.
Village leaders Alexander Maring, headman of Umdaprangi, and Julius Maring of Umdapdumu, expressed concern over the scale of the damage. They said the storm had badly affected villagers and urged the government to take immediate action.
They have appealed to the district administration to deploy officials for on-ground assessment and to provide relief and compensation to the families who have suffered the most.
As of now, there has been no official report from the authorities, but villagers are hopeful that support will be extended at the earliest.
