Imphal, May 18: In a major crackdown on insurgent activities, security forces in Manipur arrested nine extremists belonging to various banned outfits over the past 24 hours. The arrests were made during coordinated operations across five districts—Imphal East, Imphal West, Churachandpur, Thoubal, and Bishnupur.

The detained militants are affiliated with the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Chin Kuki National Defence Force (CKNDF), and United National Liberation Front (UNLF).

Among those arrested is Thongkhohou Touthang (34), a CKNDF operative allegedly involved in recruiting youths for armed insurgency and facilitating cross-border movement of weapons and cadres.

Police recovered arms, ammunition, Aadhaar cards, incriminating documents, and other materials during the operation.

“We have arrested nine more extremists during the past 24 hours. In total, 38 militants from various banned groups have been apprehended in the last four days,” said a police official.

Following the imposition of President’s Rule in the conflict-ridden state, security forces have intensified combing operations to dismantle militant networks.
