Shillong, May 16: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday confirmed that classes at the Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) in Mawlai Kynton Massar will begin from the current academic session. This announcement follows the recent approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to start undergraduate courses in Civil and Electrical Engineering.

“We are very happy. As has been promised, we got the AICTE approval for starting the Shillong engineering college, and we will begin from this academic session only,” said a visibly elated Sangma after receiving the official nod from AICTE.

The college’s launch had previously been delayed due to infrastructure shortcomings highlighted by the council. However, the State government worked to resolve the issues while continuing to pursue the approval.

When asked about the deficiencies flagged earlier, the minister responded, “We are ready, and there are certain deficiencies. But now that AICTE has approved it after being aware of them, we will start.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to social media to share the news, calling it a significant milestone for technical education in Meghalaya.
