GUWAHATI, Jan 6: At least 13 coal miners are reportedly stranded in a flooded coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district since 7 a.m. on Monday. The incident occurred at Coal Mine No. 19 in Tin Kilo under the jurisdiction of Umrangso police station, according to local sources.
Initially, 27 miners were trapped inside the mine, but 10 managed to escape, leaving between 13 to 17 miners unaccounted for.
Although there has been no official confirmation yet, an official from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) acknowledged receiving reports about the incident. “We have been informed about labourers being trapped in the mine, but the report is yet to be verified. Our Deputy Commissioner is visiting the site, and if confirmed, rescue operations will be launched immediately,” the official stated.
Preliminary reports suggest the mine lacked basic safety barricades, with video footage shared with authorities corroborating these claims. Concerns are mounting about the mine’s illegal operation, allegedly carried out under the protection of local politicians and law enforcement, with no safety precautions in place.
Family members of the trapped miners are anxiously awaiting news. One relative shared their anguish: “I came here after hearing from my daughter that her husband is trapped in the mine. I do not know how many people are trapped, but I know he is among them.”
The absence of safety measures and the alleged illegal nature of the mining operation have compounded the gravity of the situation, sparking public outrage. Authorities are under mounting pressure to act swiftly and initiate rescue efforts as concern continues to grow.
