Guwahati, July 22: United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) has announced its refusal to comply with summons issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court to its top leaders, including the chairman and general secretary, regarding a case involving a grenade attack on an army camp last year.
Ishan Asom, a leader from the ULFA(I) publicity wing, stated, “The conflict between Assam and India is not merely a law and order issue; it demands a political solution.” He urged the NIA to push the Union government towards political dialogue about Assam’s sovereignty. “If such actions persist, our resistance will intensify,” the statement warned.
Recently, the NIA court issued a public notice summoning ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah, senior leader Arunodoy Asom, and others for the trial concerning the grenade attack on an army camp in Kakopathar, Upper Assam, Tinsukia district, in November last year. Despite the attack causing no injuries, the case was handed over to the NIA.
In May, the NIA filed chargesheets against Baruah and five others, accusing them of orchestrating the attack carried out by two youths on motorcycles. ULFA-I dismissed these actions, labeling them as trivial and accused intelligence agencies like RAW, IB, and MI of engaging in what they termed “childish” tactics.
