Tura, Apr 28:In a tragic turn of events, Garo Hills has been rattled by two devastating accidents involving dumpers within a short span of time. The first incident resulted in a 14-year-old girl losing one of her legs, and now, another victim is fighting for his life in a hospital in Tura.

The community is left questioning why these dumpers are permitted to operate during daylight hours without stricter oversight from state authorities. The anguish deepens as families face the consequences of these accidents, which have robbed promising futures from the region.

While concerns are raised about teenage driving, including two-wheelers, there is a parallel discussion about parental responsibility in ensuring their children’s safety, such as insisting on helmet use. In addition, there are calls for increased vigilance from traffic police to enforce helmet laws and penalize offenders.

Authorities are urged to take immediate action, regulating the timing of heavy trucks and dumpers, particularly in areas with narrow roads. Proper signage and speed limits are emphasized to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.

Notably in response to a series of devastating accidents involving heavy trucks in Garo Hills, recently a coalition of five prominent organizations has come together to appeal for stringent restrictions on the movement of such vehicles to and from Tura and its surrounding areas.

Comprising the Garo Students Union, Federation of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo People, Achik Youth Welfare Organisation, Association for Democracy and Empowerment, and Federation of Achik Freedom, the coalition jointly addressed a letter to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chelani.

Meanwhile the fate of the young victim from Tura hangs in the balance, as the community hopes for a recovery and demands swift measures to prevent further accidents in the future.
