Security beefed up in Shillong following petrol bomb attack at Deputy CM’s residence

SHILLONG, APR 27: Miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the residence of the Deputy Chief Minister incharge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar at Nongmynsong on Thursday night.

In light of the incident, security has also been beefed up in the residences of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong, cabinet ministers and important government installations.

An FIR in connection with the incident was filed by Dhar on Friday.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Rituraj Ravi however informed that the police are yet to ascertain the “object” that was hurled at the residence of the deputy CM.

“We have received an FIR from the deputy CM and we are still investigating what that object actually is and we will update you once further detail emerges on this,” he said.

However sources informed the miscreants had lobbed the petrol bomb from across the road and it hit the side balcony of the deputy chief minister’s house. However, there was no damage caused during the incident.

When asked, Ravi said, “We are not ruling out anything at this stage…(but) the object fell inside the premises of the deputy CM’s residence.”

On April 24, a petrol bomb was also lobbed at the escort vehicle of the NEEPCO top official at Demthring.

Further, the SP informed that security has been beefed up in the residences of the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, deputy chief ministers – Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, cabinet ministers and all vital government installations following the incidents of petrol bomb attacks.

“However in light of these events, we are taking further measures to strengthen security.”

He also assured, “We are on the job and all investigations are being done in a thorough manner and we are confident and hopeful that all perpetrators of any crime whatsoever shall be brought to justice.”

The SP also urged all peace loving citizens of the state not to take the law into their own hands and to cooperate with the investigations that are going on and to follow the rule of law.

Meanwhile, he informed that a “burning rag” and not petrol bomb was thrown at the escort vehicle of the NEEPCO’s top official and that a case has been registered and police have started the investigation to nab the culprits behind the incident.
