Guwahati, April 26: As many as 120 houses on Chittaranjan Road in Silchar boycotted the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 to protest against the recurring flash flood problem.

The residents abstained from voting, citing unresolved issues over the past 10 years. “We have boycotted voting because our problems have not been addressed despite repeated pleas. We have been suffering from flash floods for the past 10 years, and our concerns have not been addressed by the authorities. Our area has become unhealthy due to stagnant, dirty water after heavy rainfall. Today, in protest against the unresolved issues, we have abstained from voting,” said a female resident of Chittaranjan Road.

Another senior citizen stated, “After just one hour of rain, our lane becomes submerged under dirty water. We have submitted memorandums to the MLA, MP, and all stakeholders. Six months ago, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty assured us that he would find a solution to the problem, but nothing has been done to date.”

“We have supported the BJP and ‘Modiji’, but our waterlogging problem remains unsolved. We are fed up and have decided not to cast our votes this time. We have 120 houses in our locality, and no one has cast their vote,”.
