Shillong, Dec 20: In view of the upcoming Christmas and New Year, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) on Wednesday announced that the department will conduct vigorous checking drives across Shillong City to reduce road crash casualties and fatalities.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem, stated that the traffic police will increase checking in city areas including bypasses, highways and locality roads and anyone found driving under the influence of alcohol exceeding the permissible limit (30 mg. per 100 ml. of blood) shall be punishable under Section 185 MV Act with a fine of Rs. 10,000 or imprisonment which may extend upto 6 months or with both.

“The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) will focus more on the detection of Drunk Driving and Dangerous Driving in addition to other MV Act violations as this is a cause for concern,” Syiem said in the statement.

The SP urged motorists not only to drive safely but also emphasized the importance of abstaining from drinking and driving, highlighting the significance of ensuring not just their own safety but also that of others.
